Welcome to the hybrid Journal Club!

After a long pause due, again, to covid, the journal club "Quantum black holes on the plateau" will restart in a brand new, hybrid mode

where: IPhT, CEA Saclay and on-line

when:  every other Friday at 2:15 p.m.

topics:  recent papers related to the quantum structure of black holes, bulk EFT, Page curves, etc.

how it works:
one person prepares a presentation, and everyone else reads the paper and prepares for a discussion. Papers can either be chosen from the suggested readings on this website, or the speaker can come up with his/her own paper to read, which should fit with the general topic of the journal club.  

practical:

  • directions to the IPhT can be found here
  • the room will either be amphi Bloch or salle Itzykson, both on the IPhT  ground floor, depending on covid-related restrictions  
  • wearing a mask is compulsory, except for the speaker
  • internet is provided via eduroam or orme-enregistrement/access
  • outside participants who would like to spend the entire day at the IPhT can contact  Monica for lunch arrangements
  • the videoconferencing link and password for the on-line participants will be sent by e-mail to those registered to the JC mailing list     
  • the JC will not be recorded

The journal club is back!

The "Quantum black holes on the plateu" Journal club,  temporarily stopped due to Covid-19, will start again at a new time and new location:

where: ENS Paris (Montagne Sainte-Genevieve, so still a hill, if not a plateau)                      

            24 Rue Lhomond, Paris 75005

            salle L361 (24 people), a priori reserved on 19 & 26/10, 09/11, 14 & 21/12

            salle L382/384 (16 people) reserved for  12/10, 02, 16, 23 & 30/11, 07/12

when: the JC will take place on Mondays at 2 p.m. , in principle every other week.

  • on Friday,  November 15th Yixuan Li  and  Severin Lüst will discuss the main swampland conjectures, as follows:

    - In the first part, Yixuan will give a short presentation of the panel of the different swampland conjectures (centering on the Weak Gravity Conjecture and the Distance Conjecture) that have been stated, and some links between them, using sections 2,3,4 of   Eran Palti's review

Journal club dates in spring 2019

The dates of the journal club until summer 2019 are:

  • on Friday, May 10th , Emil Martinec will explain the core ideas in ``JT gravity as a matrix integral'' by Saad, Shenker and Stanford  arXiv:1903.11115, which attempts a nonperturbative definition of (nearly) AdS2 quantum gravity through matrix model techniques. This work follows on a rich history of attempts to quantize 2d gravity, some of which will be described.  Background material for these aspects of the discussion is older work on the relation between matrix models and Liouville gravity on which much of their discussion is based:
